Proper piercing aftercare is one of the most important parts of your piercing experience — and it starts the moment you walk out our door. At Essence Body Art in Eau Claire, WI, our founder Josh Mohr is committed to making sure every client leaves not just with a beautiful new piercing, but with the knowledge to heal it well. We recommend cleaning piercings twice daily with sterile saline, avoiding harsh products and unnecessary touching, and returning to the studio for a professional downsizing once swelling subsides. Below you'll find everything you need to know, including care instructions for oral piercings, what nesting means for lip piercings, and when it's time to come back and see us.

General Piercing Aftercare

How Do You Clean a New Piercing?

Clean your piercing twice daily — once in the morning and once at night. Always wash your hands thoroughly before touching the area. Use sterile saline solution (our preferred method) or clean potable water to gently rinse away any discharge or dried crust. Pat the area dry with a clean, disposable paper product — never a reusable cloth or towel, which can harbor bacteria and snag jewelry. If soaking has been recommended for your piercing, apply a sterile saline compress for 5–10 minutes and always discard the solution after a single use.

What's Normal After Getting a Piercing?

Some signs are completely expected during the healing process. You may notice:

  • Mild redness, swelling, or tenderness around the piercing site

  • Clear or pale yellow discharge that dries and forms a crust

These are signs your body is doing exactly what it's supposed to. Don't be alarmed — just keep up with your cleaning routine and be patient.

What Should You Avoid With a New Piercing?

Keeping irritants away from a healing piercing is just as important as cleaning it. Avoid the following during the healing period:

  • Alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, iodine, soap, or any ointments near the piercing — these disrupt healing tissue

  • Twisting, rotating, or touching the jewelry unnecessarily

  • Makeup, creams, lotions, or other products near the piercing site

  • Swimming in pools, lakes, hot tubs, or any bodies of water until the piercing is fully healed

  • Allowing hair, clothing, or bedding to snag or press against the jewelry

Jewelry During Healing

Leave your jewelry in place throughout the healing process even if you think the piercing has healed, removing jewelry too soon can cause the piercing to close quickly and permanently. Do not change your jewelry until your piercing is fully healed or until a professional advises it's safe to do so. Sleep on clean bedding, and try to keep anything that touches the area as clean and minimal as possible.

When Should You Seek Professional Help for a Piercing?

Most piercings heal without issue when properly cared for, but it's important to know the warning signs. Visit Essence Body Art or a medical professional if you notice:

  • Increasing pain, heat, or swelling that is getting worse, not better

  • Thick yellow or green discharge, or a strong, unpleasant odor

  • Fever, chills, or redness that appears to be spreading beyond the piercing site

These may indicate an infection or other complication that needs prompt attention. Never attempt to remove infected jewelry on your own, always consult a professional first.

Oral Piercing Aftercare

Oral piercings — including tongue, lip, and labret piercings — require care on two fronts: the inside of the mouth and the outer skin. Both sides need attention to ensure clean, comfortable healing.

How Do You Care for an Oral Piercing — Inside the Mouth?

Rinse with a non-alcoholic, antiseptic mouthwash 2–3 times daily, swishing gently for 30–60 seconds each time. You should also rinse with water after eating, after drinking anything other than water, or after smoking. Do not dilute the mouthwash unless directed by the label — full-strength formulas are calibrated for effective antiseptic care.

How Do You Care for the Skin Side of an Oral Piercing?

Clean the outer skin surface twice daily. Wash your hands first, then use sterile saline or clean potable water to gently rinse away any buildup around the jewelry. Pat dry with a clean, disposable paper product. If a compress is needed, apply sterile saline for 5–10 minutes and discard after each use.

What's Normal With an Oral Piercing?

Swelling is very common with oral piercings and often peaks around days two and three before gradually subsiding. Some light bleeding in the first day or two is normal, as is clear or pale discharge. Oral piercings heal in stages, so patience is especially important with these placements.

What Should You Avoid With an Oral Piercing?

  • Alcohol-based mouthwash — it's too harsh and can damage healing tissue

  • Twisting, biting, or playing with the jewelry

  • Oral contact — including kissing and oral sex — during the early healing stage

  • Smoking and vaping, which slow healing and introduce bacteria

  • Spicy foods and excessive caffeine, which can cause unnecessary irritation

  • Alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, iodine, or soap on the external skin side

In the first few days, prioritize soft foods, stay well-hydrated, and maintain good oral hygiene with gentle brushing. Your oral piercing will heal beautifully with the right attention.

What Is Nesting in a Lip Piercing?

If you have a lip or labret piercing, you may have heard the term "nesting" — and you may even notice it happening to your own jewelry. Nesting is a normal and expected part of the healing process for many lip piercings, and understanding it can save you a lot of unnecessary worry.

Is Nesting Normal in a Lip Piercing?

Yes — nesting is completely normal. As swelling decreases and the body begins to heal, the flat back of the labret jewelry may gently settle into the inner lip tissue. Rather than being a problem, this is actually beneficial: it protects your teeth and gums by allowing the jewelry to sit more flush, comfortably, and securely.

Healthy nesting should:

  • Feel comfortable, not painful

  • Look like the backing is sitting flush with or very slightly indented into the tissue

  • Not cause sharp pain, excessive swelling, or unusual discharge

What's the Difference Between Nesting and Embedding?

Nesting and embedding are not the same thing. Nesting is a healthy, surface-level settling of the jewelry flat back into soft tissue. Embedding occurs when jewelry begins to be absorbed into the tissue — it can look like the jewelry is disappearing or becoming increasingly difficult to see, and it's often accompanied by pain, tightness, or swelling that doesn't improve.

If your lip piercing is causing significant pain, the jewelry seems to be sinking further in, or the area feels tight and swollen rather than comfortable, stop by Essence Body Art for an assessment. We're always happy to take a look and make sure everything is healing safely.

Why Downsizing Your Piercing Jewelry Matters

One of the most important steps in your healing journey is one that a lot of clients overlook: returning to the studio for a professional downsizing.

What Is Downsizing a Piercing and When Should You Do It?

Your initial jewelry is intentionally fitted longer to accommodate the swelling that occurs in the first weeks after a piercing. Once that swelling has resolved, wearing jewelry that's still too long can become a real problem — the excess length allows for more movement, snagging, and accidental trauma, which can cause irritation, bumps, migration, and significantly delayed healing.

Properly downsized jewelry:

  • Reduces snagging and accidental trauma

  • Minimizes ongoing irritation and redness

  • Helps prevent irritation bumps and jewelry migration

  • Promotes faster, healthier long-term healing

  • Improves both comfort and the overall appearance of the piercing

We recommend returning to Essence Body Art for a professional downsizing approximately 4–6 weeks after your initial appointment, once swelling has fully subsided. Our team will assess your piercing, confirm it's progressing well, and fit you with jewelry that's the right length to support continued healing and long-term comfort.

Not sure if it's time to downsize? Just stop by or give us a call. We're always happy to take a look and guide you through the next step.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for a piercing to heal?

Healing time varies widely depending on the piercing placement and your body. Earlobe piercings can heal in as little as 6–8 weeks, while cartilage, nostril, and navel piercings may take 6–12 months or longer. Oral piercings often heal faster on the inside but can take 3–6 months for full healing. The most important thing is not to rush the process — a piercing can look healed on the surface while still healing internally.

Can I change my piercing jewelry at home?

We strongly recommend having your first jewelry change done by a professional, especially before the piercing is fully healed. Changing jewelry too early — or incorrectly — can cause trauma to the piercing channel, introduce bacteria, or cause the piercing to close. Once your piercing is fully healed, you're welcome to change jewelry at home, though we're always happy to help if you'd prefer professional assistance.

What saline solution should I use for piercing aftercare?

Use a sterile, isotonic saline solution — ideally one specifically formulated for wound care, such as a 0.9% sodium chloride spray. Look for products labeled as "sterile wound wash" or "piercing aftercare spray." Avoid making your own saltwater solution at home, as the ratio can be difficult to measure accurately, and tap water is not sterile.
